Quaternary prevention aims to protect patients from unnecessary diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, with the goal of minimizing iatrogenesis, preventing harm, and reducing avoidable costs. This concept is especially relevant to public health and to the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS), particularly in the context of increasing social medicalization and the expansion of healthcare through the Family Health Strategy. The article emphasizes that effective communication between physician and patient is essential to prevent iatrogenic practices. Therefore, it advocates for evidence-based medicine that is centered on the real needs, values, and life context of the patient.
