Smoking causes various health harms, both short- and long-term, due to the toxic substances present in cigarettes. These substances increase the risk of respiratory infections and contribute to the development of chronic diseases such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and cancer. Additionally, smoking negatively affects sleep quality, which may lead to other health problems. This study aimed to analyze the impacts of smoking on sleep quality through a systematic literature review. The research was conducted in the PubMed and Virtual Health Library (VHL) databases, including studies published between 2019 and 2023, with observational designs or randomized clinical trials addressing the relationship between smoking and sleep disorders. A total of 11 articles met the inclusion criteria. Results indicate that nicotine stimulates the central nervous system, leading to sleep fragmentation and favoring Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), with effects observed in various population groups. It is concluded that effective measures to combat smoking are essential to promote overall health and quality sleep.
