INTRODUCTION: The concept of oral health care for patients with special needs is essential to ensure that this population receives appropriate and respectful care. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the challenges and possibilities of dental care for patients with special needs within the Unified Health System (SUS), aiming to promote inclusion and improve the quality of this care. METHODOLOGY: This is a literature review and analysis of articles from the last 15 years. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: It revealed a lack of technical preparation and infrastructure, with many dentists expressing insecurity when treating this population. The discussion highlighted the importance of including specific courses on caring for patients with special needs in dental programs, as well as the need for collaboration between educational institutions and health services. CONCLUSION: Promoting a more inclusive and effective dental care system depends on a joint commitment to develop practices that are more suitable and sensitive to the needs of this population.
