Abstract

Population aging has increased the incidence of sarcopenia, a syndrome characterized by the progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength. This condition compromises functional autonomy and quality of life in the elderly, while also placing a burden on public healthcare systems. This study aimed to investigate, through a bibliographic review, the benefits of strength training in the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia. Scientific articles published between 2020 and 2025, written in Portuguese and indexed on Google Scholar, were analyzed using the descriptors “strength training,” “prevention,” and “sarcopenia.” The results show that strength training promotes significant gains in muscle mass and strength, improves balance, and reduces the risk of falls, making it a safe and effective intervention for older adults. In addition to physiological improvements, regular physical activity contributes positively to psychological well-being and functional independence. It is concluded that strength training should be integrated into public health strategies to promote healthy aging.
