This article aims to evaluate the mortality due to acute complications of diabetes mellitus in the state of Paraná and in Brazil, between 2012 and 2022. For this purpose, data on mortality of Brazilian individuals, of both sexes, and of all age groups, available in the Mortality Information System (SIM) of the Ministry of Health (DATASUS), were used. The results show that between 2012 and 2022, there was an increase in the mortality rate from acute complications of diabetes mellitus in Brazil (33.7%), as well as in the state of Paraná (30%). In Paraná, the macro-region with the highest number of deaths was the East (44.6%), followed by the North (20.8%) and Northwest (19.3%) regions. Both nationally (19%) and in the state of Paraná (12%), women had a higher mortality rate compared to men. Furthermore, in both scenarios, individuals aged 60 years and older were the most affected, representing more than 50% of the mortality due to diabetes. Although the prevalence of diabetes in Paraná has decreased over the past 10 years, the mortality rate continues to rise. Therefore, the development and maintenance of public policies for the control and prevention of diabetes are of utmost importance.
