Abstract

Physical Education, as a mandatory subject in the curriculum adopted in the Brazilian basic education system, has undergone significant changes throughout the history of education. Thus, a renewal movement has emerged in which a comprehensive education is recommended, in which pedagogical practice is presented with other contours. In this context, criticism of the mechanistic approach to human movement long adopted in Physical Education and the emergence of a developmental approach demand new perspectives, reflections and actions from educational actors. Thus, the objective of this study was to describe how educational sports applied as a pedagogical intervention in Physical Education classes can benefit the citizenship training of 6th grade students in a public school. For this purpose, a field study was developed in a municipal school located in the city of Ruy Barbosa-RN. The subjects studied were 6th grade A and B students and the Physical Education teacher. The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire and the data were presented using a qualitative and quantitative approach. As described by the teacher and corroborated by the students, Physical Education classes foster an atmosphere where respect prevails, encourages cooperation, solidarity and inclusion, helping students understand the importance of teamwork and empathy. In addition to the social aspects, physical/sports activities linked to sports pedagogy contribute to the physical and mental health of students, promoting healthy habits that positively impact their quality of life. It was found that in the aforementioned school, educational sports linked to the Physical Education curricular component is an important strategy to promote quality education in which learning is expanded and can be applied beyond the school walls, but for this to happen, it is important to plan classes with well-structured and targeted objectives to enhance students' learning and development. Furthermore, through classes, it is possible to stimulate physical development, ethical and moral aspects, motor skills, techniques, strategies, teamwork and, in addition to all this, stimulate reflection, critical thinking and behaviors inherent to individuals who are aware of their rights and duties in the environment.
