Cholelithiasis and cholecystitis are prevalent pathologies of the gastrointestinal tract and may be associated with risk factors such as advanced age, obesity, female gender, and sedentary lifestyle. The objective of the study is to analyze the epidemiological profile of patients hospitalized for cholecystitis and cholelithiasis associated with the number of cholecystectomies performed between 2013 and 2023 in Brazil. Data were collected through a consultation carried out at the Department of Information Technology of the Unified Health System (DATASUS), covering filters for race, age group, gender, and videolaparoscopic and conventional cholecystectomy. It was observed that the brown race was predominant in hospitalizations, and the indigenous race was the least prevalent. Regarding age, it was noted that the age group from 40 to 49 years was the most frequent and the female gender also stood out, representing 76.79% of hospitalizations. Regarding treatment, videolaparoscopic cholecystectomy is the most efficient; however, only the southeast region had a prevalence of this type of surgery, while the others performed mostly conventional cholecystectomy. Therefore, it is important to know about the epidemiological profile of patients in each Brazilian region, since the study of these characteristics linked to cholecystectomies can contribute to the prevention of these pathologies and help improve existing treatment.
