The "Leitura Solidária" project was developed to promote reading and provide access to books for children in situations of social vulnerability, cared for by the Jesus Maria José Orphanage, in Juazeiro do Norte, Ceará. This study investigated the impact of access to children's and young adult literature on the educational, social and emotional development of these children, using a qualitative approach with direct observation, semi-structured interviews and document analysis. Reading in childhood plays a crucial role in the development of cognitive, emotional and social skills, stimulating creativity, expanding vocabulary and promoting social inclusion. Many children in situations of vulnerability do not have access to books, limiting their development. "Leitura Solidária" seeks to meet this need, promoting reading as a tool for learning and inclusion. The results showed a significant impact on children's engagement with reading, improving attention, vocabulary and school performance. Reading activities helped children develop their socio-emotional skills and the local community was mobilized, increasing the visibility of the orphanage. Challenges include the need to diversify the books and implement long-term impact assessments. Future work could explore replicating the model in other institutions and incorporating digital technologies.
