Abstract

This work aims to present, in a systematic and organized way, the studies carried out on the main ways of teaching literacy to children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, as well as the problems and challenges encountered during the process. Throughout this article, the history of studies and research on the autistic spectrum will be introduced, the main characteristics and their diagnoses, the repercussion of these characteristics in the learning process, as well as the problems and possible approaches. Thus, the research collaborates with the conceptual enrichment and encourages the debate on the existing methods for an effective literacy and inclusion of the child with ASD. This research is of a qualitative nature, as it will address relevant aspects for the literacy of children diagnosed with ASD, in addition to characteristics and methodologies that facilitate this process. In this way, it is expected that teachers and students will have the possibility of new methods and facilities so that the literacy process of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder is effective and productive. It is also intended that the history and main characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder be further studied.
