This study examines the role of psychologists in CAPS III, an essential SUS facility for the care of individuals with severe mental disorders. The research highlights challenges such as patient resistance to discharge and difficulties stemming from the unequal distribution of services. The interdisciplinary approach at CAPS III fosters integrated care, autonomy, and the strengthening of social bonds. Using qualitative interviews, the study reveals that activities at CAPS include welcoming, group interventions, and individualized therapeutic planning. Despite significant contributions to mental health, high demand, limited resources, and team overload hinder the provision of more comprehensive care. The study concludes that CAPS III is a cornerstone of mental health care within SUS but requires investments in infrastructure and strategies to facilitate patient transitions to other services, promoting a more accessible and efficient system.
