Abstract

This research article used a quantitative methodology with analysis of the INEP database, which allowed for a detailed and better understanding of the significant increase in enrollments in distance learning university courses in recent years, and also a qualitative methodology with bibliographic research. The general objective of the article is: to understand the historical evolution of distance education in Brazil and when it was implemented. And with specific objectives: to understand the growth of this modality today; to analyze why students choose distance learning; to explain the importance of using artificial intelligence tools in university education (EaD). Over the years and thanks to the use of digital technologies, the offer of university courses in this modality has increased considerably, but it has opened up new educational perspectives. Currently, quality, interesting and attractive diplomas are offered, with stimulating digital tools, accessible from anywhere, guaranteeing access to Higher Education for a large part of the population.
