This article sought to explore the history of people with disabilities, marked by centuries of marginalization, exclusion and discrimination, especially in ancient civilizations. However, throughout the 20th century, there was a significant transformation in the way disability is understood, with important advances in the fight for human rights. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the UN in 1948, was a crucial milestone in the recognition of the rights of people with disabilities. Brazil, by ratifying the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2008 and enacting the Brazilian Inclusion Law in 2015, made significant progress in creating a more accessible and inclusive environment. However, the implementation of these laws still faces challenges, such as lack of accessibility and persistent prejudice. The inclusion of people with disabilities requires an ongoing effort, which involves not only legislative changes, but also cultural and social transformation, ensuring equal opportunities and respect for the dignity of all.
