Early weaning, defined as the discontinuation of exclusive breastfeeding before six months of age, is a concerning phenomenon with negative impacts on maternal and infant health. This study aimed to identify the main factors influencing early weaning, as well as to propose effective strategies to promote exclusive and prolonged breastfeeding. The methodology adopted was a bibliographic review that analyzed national and international studies on the topic. The results indicate that individual factors, such as maternal age and lack of knowledge about breastfeeding, along with socioeconomic issues, such as early return to work and limited access to support policies, are determinants of early weaning. The research also highlights the importance of interventions that integrate family, educational, and professional support, with an emphasis on the role of healthcare professionals and public policies. It is concluded that coordinated actions between the government, healthcare professionals, and society are essential to prevent early weaning and ensure the success of prolonged breastfeeding.
