Brazil has a high rate of cesarean sections, with approximately 80% of births performed by the SUS being cesarean sections, exceeding the WHO recommendation. The lack of a humanized approach to childbirth, including lack of information and safety for pregnant women, contributes to this scenario. Humanized childbirth aims to value women's autonomy, reducing unnecessary interventions and promoting woman-centered care, with nursing playing a fundamental role in this process. The objective was to investigate the role of nurses in humanized childbirth, addressing challenges, practices and contributions to ensure a positive experience. A literature review was carried out between 2019 and 2024, resulting in the selection of 21 articles relevant to the research. Humanized childbirth seeks to make birth more welcoming and centered on the needs of women, with nurses playing an essential role in technical and emotional support. Effective communication, the use of non-pharmacological practices for pain relief and continuous support are essential to promote a more respectful and less invasive childbirth. Furthermore, the reduction of unnecessary medical interventions and the empowerment of pregnant women through birth plans result in a more satisfactory and safe experience, improving maternal and child health.
