Abstract

This article aims to analyze Angela Davis's book “Are Prisons Obsolete?” from the perspective of Brazilian society, highlighting the reality of our country's prison system. Furthermore, it seeks to understand the nuances of the ineffectiveness of Law No. 9,455/1997, particularly as it impacts the majority of the black prison population in Brazil. Consequently, this article suggests a comprehensive reform of the current situation, advocating for the updating of legislation on the crime of torture and the broader prison system.
