The objective of this study is to adopt specific preventive measures, significantly reducing the risk of complications during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. This is an integrative literature review, carried out in stages to identify the theme and, thus, select the relevant articles and study categories. After this identification, a search was carried out in the SciELO, LILACS and PubMed databases. In this context, the gestational period requires special care, with prenatal care being a crucial phase for maintaining the health of the pregnant woman and her baby. During this phase, specific care is offered, which involves a set of essential assistance, highlighting the importance of a comprehensive and careful assessment in primary care. It is essential to invest in the training of health professionals, highlighting the importance of participating in prenatal updates, such as courses and training offered by the municipality itself. Therefore, investing in quality prenatal care in primary care is crucial to promoting maternal and child health, ensuring a healthy start in life for the baby.
