The main dental problems that affect the child, young and adult population are caused by caries, requiring rapid intervention to avoid further complications and compromise of the tooth structure and peripheral areas. One of the treatments available to treat superficial cases of caries is Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART), an alternative to invasive restorative treatments. The general objective of this research was to investigate the relevance of the use of ART in children, young people and adults. The methodology of integrative literature review was used to build the results of this research with a qualitative approach, basic nature and descriptive objective. The results showed that ART is an appropriate technique for the treatment of superficial dental damage caused by caries. It is recommended for less complex cases, patients with phobia or fear, patients with pre-existing medical problems (heart, diabetes and others), etc. Its advantages are low cost, less invasiveness, no risks, aid in prevention, among others. While disadvantages were identified as lower durability, possibility of infiltration by moisture, lower aesthetic quality and others. In permanent teeth, it is necessary to evaluate the adequacy of the ART, but the release of fluoride by the restored material contributes positively to the prevention of the permanent tooth structure. The research was concluded observing the need for professional conduct of continuing education for adequate handling of the technique, thus ensuring greater success.
