Abstract

The effectiveness of military police interventions can be assessed through a variety of metrics, including crime rate statistics, community perceptions of safety, and case studies of specific operations. This article aims to analyze the historical context of military police intervention in Brazil’s favelas, assess their effectiveness in improving public safety, and explore the critiques and challenges associated with these strategies to provide a nuanced understanding of this multifaceted issue. The methodology used to achieve the proposed objectives was bibliographic research, which sought support from books and scientific articles. It is concluded that assessing the effectiveness of these interventions requires a nuanced understanding of the socioeconomic realities faced by favela residents, as well as an acknowledgement of the limitations of militarized policing. Criticisms surrounding military police strategies highlight the urgent need for alternative approaches that emphasize community engagement, social development, and respect for human rights.
