Family farming plays a fundamental role and has sought institutionalized support from the so-called Technical Assistance and Rural Extension (ATER), so that strategies for better coexistence with the semi-arid region can be developed. The present study aims to answer questions about the participatory methodologies adopted by ATER and the advances made in these services, mainly regarding greater sustainability for family farming in Brazil. This research is qualitative in nature and was carried out through a literature review. Therefore, it is understood that ATER's work must involve participatory methodologies, in order to configure spaces for interaction, in addition to giving family farming a voice and a voice. In this way, participatory methodologies such as Rapid Diagnosis or Rural Participatory-DRP; The field day in the extension; Participatory Research Units; Participatory Forest Management, among others, began to bring a new trajectory to rural extension, in a participatory way. Therefore, it is expected that participatory methodologies will stimulate the exchange of knowledge and that related projects and actions will emerge from the diagnosis and involvement of peasants. However, there are still challenges that require everything from the training of extensionists that completely abandon the logic of technology transfers, to greater investments, so that this popular education policy reaches everyone, and really becomes effective as a right of peasants contributing for rural development aimed at sustainability.
