Oral cancer has become a public health problem due to late diagnosis, resulting in high mortality. Brazil has the highest incidence rate of oral cancer in South America, with 3.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, and the second highest mortality rate, reaching 1.5 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants (INSTITUTO NACIONAL DE CÂNCER, 2022). Due to the easy access to the oral cavity for examinations, it is extremely important that health professionals are trained in preventive oral examinations. This review aimed to gather information on the knowledge of dentists regarding oral cancer and their ability to provide diagnosis, guidance, create prevention strategies and treatments for patients. The main risk factors include tobacco use, alcoholism, family history and sun exposure. It is important that dentists are aware of emerging risk factors for oral and oropharyngeal cancer, including HPV infection. Campaigns promoting awareness of risk factors and the importance of regular checkups are essential in reducing the incidence of oral cancer.
