Abstract

Media criminology is the name given by the doctrine to the interference that the media exerts in the Brazilian penal system. Through sensationalist programs, with popular presenters outraged by the crime rate, the media reports the occurrence of cruel crimes, with fatal victims and a high degree of social disapproval, exposing the alleged perpetrator as an unscrupulous individual and shouting the immediate need for him to be removed from society and placed in a prison where he must remain for decades. It turns out that, in most cases, these individuals have not yet been brought to trial in court, but have already been convicted by the public, with no right to appeal. Considering the importance of the media in society, the research aims to analyze the impact of media criminology on the public perception of crime and on public policies in Brazil. Through deductive research, based on bibliographic and exploratory material and based on qualitative analysis of the content, the study will elucidate the influence of the media on the public perception of crime and its confrontation, demonstrating the impact that media criminology has on society and how it interferes with the State's role in creating stricter laws to meet social desires.
