Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic condition that affects the endocrine system and impacts millions of people globally. Objective: This study investigates herbal medicines as an alternative or complement to the conventional treatment of diabetes mellitus, analyzing their efficacy, safety and impact on blood glucose control. Methodology: The research, of a descriptive and bibliographic nature, uses a qualitative approach based on dialectical materialism, focusing on studies published between 2020 and 2024. Results and Discussion: Articles examining the effects of medicinal plants on glucose and insulin metabolism were reviewed, seeking to identify compounds that may offer a more natural approach. Conclusion: It is concluded that herbal medicines are an important alternative or complement to conventional treatments for diabetes mellitus, as they have the potential to improve glycemic control and reduce complications associated with the disease.
