Urinary tract infection (UTI) is defined by the invasion and multiplication of pathogenic microorganisms in the urinary tract, which can generate different manifestations and different levels of severity. The present study aims to investigate the pathophysiology related to UTIs during pregnancy, as well as discuss their conditions clinicians and management strategies. The study methodology was to evaluate articles through searches in the PubMed database, using the descriptors “Urinary Tract Infections” AND “Pregnancy”, published between 2018 and 2024. UTIs can manifest themselves as asymptomatic bacteriuria, cystitis and pyelonephritis, all of which are treated with antibiotics during pregnancy. In this sense, the diagnosis is based on the patient's symptoms and tests, including urine culture with an antibiogram and type I urine test (EAS). In short, urinary tract infection during pregnancy represents a significant concern due to the potential risks for the mother and fetus and, given this, this study highlighted the importance of prenatal screening, especially for asymptomatic bacteriuria.
