Self-medication, especially with analgesics and anti-inflammatories, is a common practice among the elderly, who may resort to these medications to relieve pain and discomfort. However, self-medication presents significant risks, such as drug interactions, adverse effects and exacerbation of preexisting conditions. It is essential that health professionals promote education and awareness about the safe use of medicines, considering the physiological particularities and the polymedicine frequently present in this population. A careful approach and professional guidance are essential to guarantee the health and well-being of elderly patients, preventing complications associated with self-medication.
