Based on a heterogeneous conception of time, this study seeks to reflect on the conflicts between the workers' movement and the environmental movements which had their culmination in Criciúma especially since the 1990s, admitting them as concomitance of two times that brought with them divergent projects of future for the city: the past-present of the Capital do Carvão, still in search of the full realization of the progress promised by him during the twentieth century, and the "presentism" time of Cidade das Etnias, willing to almost everything to stop the reach of this same promise coal. It is understood that the growing practices of patrimonialization of the environment and memory, especially of an overvaluation of the memory of the groups that colonized the region from the end of the 19th century, played a strategic role in the processes of rearrangement of a political culture legitimized in the traditional schemes of ethnic identification, and who had in the strength of the labor movement one of its main opponents.
