One of the most discussed topics in the field of Public Security in Brazil concerns crime. Homicides, robberies, and several other types of crimes are committed every minute in the country. To change this reality, in recent decades there has been a focus on community policing, which, in general, is an approach to law enforcement that emphasizes collaboration between the police and the local community. This study aimed to discuss the real situation of Brazilian Public Security. To this end, it focused on community policing and its social effectiveness as a measure for improving Public Security services. It was based on a bibliographic review, based on scientific articles, books, periodicals, and current legislation on the respective topic. Data collection was carried out through databases such as Scielo, Google Scholar, among others, from 2018 to 2024. The results found that by involving the community in identifying and resolving local security problems, community policing can help prevent crime before it occurs. This is achieved by addressing underlying issues that contribute to crime, such as lack of opportunities for young people, public disorder and poor lighting in problem areas. Regular interaction between the police and the community can help reduce conflict and misunderstandings. When community members get to know police officers in a non-confrontational capacity, they may feel more comfortable reporting problems and seeking help when needed.
