Breast milk is a unique and essential food for babies, offering all the nutrients necessary for their healthy growth and development. In addition, breastfeeding not only nourishes the baby, but also strengthens the emotional bond between mother and child, providing benefits for both physical and emotional health. From this perspective, difficulties can arise in this practice, and the role of nursing in breastfeeding care is essential. In view of the above, the aim of this study is to elucidate how the nursing team acts in the practice of breastfeeding, highlighting its importance and benefits, as well as the actions that the professional takes to stimulate and assist the puerperal woman and the newborn. This study is characterized as a literature review on the role of nurses in promoting breastfeeding. Ten studies carried out between 2018 and 2024 were selected to analyze the interventions and strategies adopted by nurses to support mothers during the breastfeeding process. The results revealed the importance of nurses providing guidance and support to pregnant and postpartum women, with the aim of encouraging exclusive breastfeeding until the baby is six months old. In addition, several difficulties faced by mothers were identified, such as lack of information, pain during breastfeeding and lack of family support. The conclusion is that nurses play a fundamental role in promoting breastfeeding, and it is essential to invest in training and continuing education for these professionals to ensure quality care for women and babies.
