Cholecystectomy is the surgical removal of the gallbladder when it is no longer functional or viable, such as in cases of inflammation, ruptures, mucoceles, cholelithiasis, bacterial infections and neoplasms. The removal aims to resolve the clinical signs presented by the patient. The diagnosis of biliary disorders is usually complex and requires adequate evaluation of the patient. The traditional laparotomy technique is the most used, however, with the advancement of minimally invasive techniques, the laparoscopy technique is gaining more and more space, as it is a safer technique that can avoid unnecessary laparotomy. Some of the advantages of laparoscopy include less patient stress, more accurate diagnosis, rapid recovery, reduced possibility of infections, high success rate and resolution of clinical signs.
