This article aimed to demonstrate the importance of studying the history of mathematics, specifically in the development of number systems. It is a qualitative, bibliographical research that elucidates the numbering systems of various peoples (Egyptians, Babylonians, Mayans, Romans, Greeks, Hindus, and Arabs). It was observed that the study of the history of mathematics is essential, as it allows for an understanding of the evolution of logical and critical thinking, enhancing the ability to solve problems and innovate in mathematical practice. Furthermore, understanding the development of number systems across different cultures and eras reveals how the specific needs of each society shaped the creation and improvement of counting and calculation methods, highlighting the deep connection between mathematical advancement and the historical context. Finally, the research emphasizes the importance of studying the history of mathematics not only to understand its technical development but also to appreciate the cultural and historical context that shaped its growth.
