Abstract

This study aimed to systematically review the existing literature to assess the extent to which physical activity influences cancer prevention. The aim was to identify which types of cancer are most affected by physical exercise, as well as to understand best practices in terms of frequency, intensity and type of physical activity for cancer prevention. Observational studies, clinical trials, systematic reviews and meta-analyses that investigated the relationship between physical activity and cancer prevention were considered for inclusion. Evidence indicates that both moderate and vigorous intensity physical activity are associated with a reduction in cancer risk, with aerobic and resistance exercise offering distinct benefits. Regular physical activity, regardless of intensity, was consistently associated with a reduction in overall cancer risk. This systematic review concludes that physical activity has a significant protective impact against the development of several types of cancer; however, further studies are needed to clarify the dose-response relationship between physical activity and cancer prevention, as well as to explore the underlying biological mechanisms and the influence of genetic factors.
