Abstract

This article sought to discuss the means by which nurses can act to recognize and intervene in PPD. This is qualitative and descriptive research supported by an integrative literature review. Data collection includes research carried out in academic-scientific databases, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS). It is observed that the nurse, due to constant contact with postpartum women, is identified as the professional best suited to carry out screening and offer advice on postpartum depression. In addition to using scales such as the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, observing mother-child interaction and analyzing non-verbal communication to identify signs of depression. It is noted that early detection and appropriate interventions can prevent worsening resulting from PPD and improve the well-being of the mother and baby, through nursing actions in promoting humanized and welcoming care resulting from the implementation of self-care strategies. it is possible to provide a safe and welcoming environment, where mothers can express their fears and doubts.
