Continuing education of teachers has received outstanding attention in the educational field. The general objective of the study is to address the importance of continuing education for Higher Education teachers as well as their teaching practice. This is a review of systematic literature that used relevant studies from the Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo) and dissertations. The results and discussions indicate that in Brazil, teacher training emerges explicitly after the country's independence. Since then continuing education has become an important field with a growing search for professionals and, in addition, the discourses on educational change refer to the need to adopt innovative curricular practices in the educational environment. Thus, it is concluded that continuing education is a process, not a given, is an unfinished training instrument that can contribute to an ethical, quality and autonomous teaching practice.
