Learning English also impacts the formation of an individual’s identity. For many, mastering English is not just a practical skill, but a way to connect with a global community. This global identity can be both enriching and conflicting, especially in contexts where local culture is strong and well-preserved. Furthermore, adopting languages other than one’s mother tongue can destabilize the way individuals perceive their own culture and belonging. Younger generations, exposed to an increasingly English-speaking world, may develop a bicultural or multicultural identity, which, while enriching, can also generate dilemmas and tensions about their cultural allegiances. The social and cultural impacts of English language teaching are broad and multifaceted. While mastery of the language can provide access to educational and professional opportunities, its dominance also raises complex questions about inequality, identity, and the value of local cultures. Thus, it is essential that English teaching be carried out critically and consciously, promoting linguistic competence and respect and appreciation of cultural diversity. This balance is essential for language education to contribute positively to more just and inclusive societies, where different voices and stories can be heard and celebrated.
