USE OF IMAGING TECHNIQUES IN THE EVALUATION OF UTERINE FIBROIDS: ADVANCES IN TOMOGRAPHY AND MAGNETIC RESONANCE

The evaluation of uterine fibroids has been substantially improved by advances in imaging techniques, most notably computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This study reviews recent advances in these modalities, focusing on their diagnostic capabilities and limitations in the evaluation of uterine fibroids. CT has shown advances in spatial resolution and multislice technologies, facilitating the initial identification and exclusion of complications associated with fibroids. However, its use is limited by radiation exposure and reduced ability to differentiate between types of fibroid tissue. In contrast, MRI offers superiority in the detailed characterization of fibroids, with an improved ability to distinguish between submucosal, intramural, and subserosal fibroids, as well as to identify associated features such as lipomatous and hemorrhagic degeneration. The integration of imaging techniques, especially when combined, can provide a more complete and accurate view for treatment planning. However, challenges such as variability in image interpretation and the need for specialized training persist. The review suggests that while technological advances have significantly improved the evaluation of fibroids, continued innovation and combination of imaging modalities are essential to optimize diagnosis and patient management.
