The creation of an ostomy causes changes in the individual's life, including the need to perform self-care to maintain the patient's quality of life and daily activity routine, with nursing playing an important role in the care process. Nursing theories play a fundamental role by supporting care practices with conceptual and epistemological bases, guiding the profession's “thinking” regarding nursing problems during the care experience. The objective is to describe the self-care carried out by the person with an ostomy in the light of Dorothea Orem, registered in the Comprehensive Program for People with Disabilities, of the Municipal Health Department, in a municipality in Metropolitan I. The research is an exploratory descriptive study, having as a source of information field research and a mixed approach (quanti + quali). As this is research involving human beings, the study was submitted to the Research Ethics Committee, with approval opinion number 5,795,520 on 12/06/2022. Data collection was carried out through interviews with a semi-structured script, recorded, transcribed and analyzed. It is considered that both the ostomy patient and their family members are anxious and receptive to information and guidance regarding self-care. Therefore, it is necessary to activate coping mechanisms with nursing research emerging as a guideline for improving care and expanding actions and strategies for its management, based on specific theories, aimed at humanized interaction between nurses and patients.
