Distance Education (EaD) has undergone significant evolution from its early correspondence study methods to the present era, characterized by the integration of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and augmented reality. The transformation of EaD is driven by advancements in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), which have enhanced the flexibility, accessibility, and interactivity of the educational process. This study aims to outline its historical evolution, explore the active role of students in their academic journey, and discuss the importance of educators' competencies within the EaD context. The adopted methodology is bibliographic research, providing an in-depth analysis based on academic texts and specialized works. The analysis reveals that the continuous evolution of educational tools and teaching methodologies requires a dynamic and constantly updated approach. Therefore, it is expected to motivate future investigations and research in the field, highlighting the relevance of the topic for the development of innovative and effective educational practices.
