The Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by impairments in neurological development, manifesting in repetitive behaviors and deficits in communication and social interaction. Treatments for ASD are often limited, frequently relying on medications with limited efficacy and potential side effects. The aim of this study was to conduct a literature review on the effects of cannabidiol (CBD) in treating ASD symptoms. To achieve this, was conducted a bibliographic review based on case studies, non-controlled observational studies, and double-blind randomized trials against a placebo. Overall, the analyzed studies demonstrated promising results, showing substantial improvement in various relevant symptoms associated with ASD, followed by a low incidence of adverse effects. However, it is essential to address the limitations of these studies, including variations in assessment methods, CBD-to-THC ratios in the extracts used, treatment duration, and sample size. Therefore, conducting further standardized studies regarding treatment duration, extract formulations, and the use of validated questionnaires is crucial.
