Dysmenorrhea is characterized by severe menstrual pain that can occur before or during the menstrual period, affecting around 60% of women. These symptoms can have a negative impact on personal and professional life, leading to anxiety, depression, etc. Primary dysmenorrhea occurs in normal menstrual cycles, with no changes in tests, while secondary dysmenorrhea is linked to problems such as endometriosis and fibroids. Treatments include medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antispasmodics and analgesics, however the side effects lead to the search for alternative therapies, this study analyzes the use of medicinal plants in the treatment of dysmenorrhea, looking for other possibilities for women who do not feel comfortable with allopathic medications. Phytotherapy uses medicinal plants for natural treatments, and many modern medicines are derived from them. A literature review of articles on the study and treatment of dysmenorrhea with herbal medicines was carried out through a survey of available scientific production. Research indicates that Foeniculum vulgare Mill, known as fennel, is effective in treating dysmenorrhea due to the anethole present, which binds to dopamine receptors, inhibiting pain and uterine contractions. We can also observe other therapeutic proposals such as essential oils, yoga, acupuncture, physical exercise and so on, which, in combination with herbal medicine, are effective in treating dysmenorrhea.
