Abstract

Objective: To identify and analyze the distribution and scope of acupuncture techniques in public health services in Maranhão, in order to provide subsidies for the strengthening of Integrative and Complementary Practices (ICPs) in public health. Methodology: Quantitative and exploratory study based on secondary data from DATASUS and a review of the National Policy on Integrative and Complementary Practices (PNPIC). The research was divided into three phases: analysis of the PNPIC to identify acupuncture techniques, locating these techniques in DATASUS, and quantifying these practices in Maranhão between 2018 and 2022. Results and Discussion: The research highlighted a concentration of acupuncture procedures in São Luís and significant variations among municipalities. Discrepancies between the PNPIC guidelines and DATASUS records were observed, suggesting the need for improvement in the coding and categorization of therapeutic practices. Conclusion: The study emphasizes the growth of acupuncture use in Maranhão, pointing to the need for public policies that encourage professional training and the dissemination of these practices, effectively integrating them into the health system to promote the well-being of the population.
