SEGMENTAL RESECTION OF THE MANDIBLE FOR EXESIS OF CONVENTIONAL AMELOBLASTOMA: A CASE REPORT

Abstract

Introduction: Ameloblastomas are benign tumors with various origins, described as invasive, slow-growing, and generally asymptomatic. In most cases, they are detected during routine radiographic examinations, being more common in the posterior region of the jaw. Objectives: This work aims to describe a case report on segmental mandibular resection for the excision of a conventional ameloblastoma. Case report: Patient A.P.N., 58 years old, male, attended the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Traumatology service of the Oswaldo Cruz University Hospital, complaining of an increase in jaw volume, with an evolution reported for approximately two years. A computed tomography scan of the face was requested, which showed a multilocular radiolucent osteolytic lesion with a "soap bubble" appearance, expansion of the mandibular cortices in the symphyseal area, right parasymphyseal, and left mandibular body of considerable dimensions. The proposed treatment was the segmental resection of the jaw. Conclusion: Surgical resection with safety margins is still the most recommended for large conventional ameloblastomas, and the use of a reconstructive plate in these cases provides good functionality and favorable aesthetics, presenting itself as a good alternative due to its low cost when other methods of reconstruction and replacement cannot be instituted.
