Cordel literature arrived in Brazil through the Portuguese, being strongly developed in the backlands of the Northeast. Cordel, also known as “poetry of the people”, is a narrative written by cordelists who tell, through verses, stories with rich details. Cordel literature was marginalized for a long time, including in academic circles, given its origin and popular writing. Thus, the objective of this scientific initiation consists of raising awareness about the need to include Cordel Literature in the classroom, identifying pedagogical practices that contribute to the strengthening of culture, especially that of the Northeast. The theoretical foundation is supported by legislations, as well as authors: Marco Haurélio (2012), Laís Santos Honorário (2022) who contributed significantly to the development of the research. As a work methodology, bibliographic sources were used, researched in the following repositories: Books, Legislations, Google Scholar and Capes. Upon concluding the research, it became clear that the incorporation of cordel into literary literacy in the classroom can provide a unique experience of immersion in Brazilian cultural traditions, enriching linguistic skills such as reading, writing, critical and reflective thinking, in addition to strengthening the country's cultural identity.
