Recognizing that school spaces are fields of diverse expressions of subjects, these environments can contribute to the awakening of interest, participation and learning of students based on the cultural experiences that surround them. This study aims to discuss the possibilities of using popular culture as a pedagogical strategy in teaching and learning processes. This is a social research project with a qualitative approach, based on the theories of Cultural Studies in Education. It was carried out by observing the project entitled São João do Nordeste, which was applied to classes in the early years of primary education at a school in the São Luís Municipal Public Education Network, in the state of Maranhão. The interlocution between popular culture and pedagogical practices was found to be an enriching educational strategy, in line with the principles and guidelines of current Brazilian educational legislation. The students' protagonism, a focus on the plurality of the school and a commitment to sensitizing the entire school community to proposals that thematize popular culture were considered fundamental.
