This text was produced by means of an experience report based on the development of the Higher Education Teaching (HED) curricular component of the Masters-level Postgraduate Program in Science Education and Teacher Training (PPG-ECFP) at the State University of Southwest Bahia (UESB), Jequié-Ba Campus. Its aim is to describe and reflect on the development and contributions of the DES discipline, especially with regard to the professionalization of university teachers. The study is of an analytical-descriptive nature and adopted the (auto)biographical method, which allowed the narration of experiences based on reflection. The information was produced through the narratives, experiences of the author and the authors, and through a bibliographical review. The analysis and discussion were qualitative. The study of the subject Teaching in Higher Education enabled us to reflect on the constitution of the Brazilian university and the universe that makes up what we call teaching. It allowed us to perceive teaching as the professional exercise of the teacher that involves teaching, research, extension, administration and career and to reflect on the aspects that consolidate teaching in Higher Education and the training of teachers for this purpose - training processes, teaching knowledge and identity constitution.
