Burnout Syndrome (BS), a complex and debilitating condition, has emerged as a topic of great relevance in the context of healthcare professionals around the world. The prevalence of the syndrome is high among nursing professionals, given the stressful nature of these professionals' work. Therefore, this article aimed to examine BS among nursing professionals, highlighting its clinical manifestations, underlying causes and associated risk factors. To this end, an integrative review of texts published from 2015 to 2023, in English or Portuguese and made available online and free of charge, was carried out. The search carried out on the SciELO and LILACS platforms resulted in a sample of 8 academic works. The texts showed that, in general, the majority of nursing professionals affected by BS are women, with more than one employment relationship. The articles revealed that there is no discrimination regarding age and the specificity of the work. Furthermore, excessive workload was shown to be a risk factor for triggering burnout. In this way, it can be inferred that the specific physical and emotional demands of professionals' work have a negative impact on their mental health and, therefore, it is necessary to implement psychological support programs and review nurses' workloads.
