THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VITAMIN D LEVELS AND AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS

Scientific research into the relationship between vitamin D levels and autoimmune diseases has gained increasing prominence in recent years. This study aims to carry out a critical analysis of existing studies, in order to understand the nature of this relationship and its clinical relevance. Autoimmune diseases are pathologies characterized by an inadequate immune response, in which the immune system mistakenly attacks its own cells and body tissues. Several autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, type 1 diabetes and inflammatory bowel disease, have been associated with low levels of vitamin D. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated an inverse relationship between blood levels of vitamin D and the risk of developing various autoimmune diseases. It is believed that vitamin D plays an important role in regulating the immune system, acting both in modulating the inflammatory response and regulating the balance between suppressive and activating cells of the immune system. However, despite this evidence, the relationship between vitamin D and autoimmune diseases are still complex and controversial. Intervention studies with vitamin D supplementation have shown contradictory results, with some indicating clear benefits in reducing symptoms and exacerbations of the disease, while others finding no significant effect. Furthermore, the influence of multiple genetic and environmental factors on the relationship between vitamin D and autoimmune diseases have not yet been fully elucidated. More research is needed to better understand the interactions between vitamin D and the immune processes underlying autoimmune diseases.
