Nursing. Sexuality and Older Age.Abstract
The present study focuses on understanding issues related to sexuality at an older age and how nursing professionals can play a fundamental role in promoting sexual health in this group. The work highlights the physiological changes that occur with aging and how these changes can affect sexual activity. It also addresses the stigma and social discrimination faced by older people in relation to sexuality, including the mistaken idea that sexuality is exclusive to young people. The research emphasizes the importance of health education to deconstruct stereotypes and prejudices regarding sexuality in old age. This includes using appropriate language, addressing common myths and misconceptions about sex, and establishing a safe and supportive environment for discussions about sexual health. Furthermore, there is a need for nursing professionals to be well informed and qualified to deal with issues of sexuality in old age. This includes promoting prevention measures against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and AIDS. The study concludes that nursing care plays a crucial role in promoting the sexual health of older adults and improving their quality of life. Nurses must be prepared to openly address sexuality issues, provide accurate information and create a supportive environment for older adults, allowing them to enjoy a healthy and active sexual life at their prime.
