This article aims to contribute to the discussion about the importance of working with the textual genre tale and storytelling in the early years of elementary school. For this, from a bibliographical work, we bring the concept of short story genre and the storytelling as a fundamental strategy in the context of the teaching-learning process, presenting ways of using the corporal and oral technique to improve the storytelling and, with this, encourage the practice and habit of reading in students. We conclude that fairy tales can and should be used beyond a pleasurable moment, leading cultural experiences and life lessons during the child's development to an adult life.
