Abstract

Jesuit education in Brazil was one of the first attempts to implement a formal education system and, arguably, the first on a large scale in Brazilian lands. In this way, the study of Jesuit education and its teaching method is essential for understanding the historical formation of education, culture and the Brazilian State itself. Thus, the main objective of this article is to discuss Jesuit education, updating knowledge on the subject and contributing to new reflections on the subject, being justified, among other things, by the scarcity of scientific bibliography that deals with the subject. Thus, the article will work on the history of the Order, the Ratio Studiorum, the teaching and contributions of Jesuit education. For the development of the present study, a bibliographic survey was carried out, guaranteeing the qualitative methodological character of the research. Concluding that Jesuit teaching played a decisive role in the first centuries of the formation of Brazil, its method being quite robust for the time.
