Abstract

Water aerobics is a physical activity that combines aerobic and resistance exercises performed in an aquatic environment. Its regular practice has been associated with several changes in body composition, according to a review of the scientific literature. Regarding the reduction of body fat percentage, studies have shown that hydrogymnastics can be effective in promoting weight loss and decreasing subcutaneous fat. This is due to the combination of cardiovascular exercises and water resistance, which provide an increase in energy expenditure and metabolism, in addition to stimulating the development of muscle mass. In addition, hydrogymnastics can contribute to the increase in lean mass and muscle strength. Exercises performed in water offer natural resistance, which promotes muscle strengthening. Regular practice of this modality is also associated with increased bone mineral density, which is beneficial for the prevention of osteoporosis. Hydrogymnastics can also bring improvements in body composition related to the reduction of cellulite and increased skin tone. The hydrostatic pressure exerted by water helps to improve blood and lymphatic circulation, promoting the elimination of toxins and increased tissue oxygenation. This can result in a reduction in the orange peel characteristic of cellulite and a firmer appearance of the skin. It is important to emphasize that the benefits in body composition with the regular practice of hydrogymnastics may vary according to the intensity of the exercises, the frequency of the sessions and the duration of the training program. In addition, it is essential to combine physical activity with a balanced diet to obtain even more expressive results. In conclusion, hydrogymnastics, when practiced regularly, can bring about several positive changes in body composition, including a reduction in the percentage of and muscle strength, improved bone mineral density, reduced cellulite and increased skin tone.
