The present article proposes a reflection on the importance of the role of the State as a consumer in the implementation of sustainable practices. The research highlights examples of public policies in different parts of the world that aim to promote sustainability through the acquisition of more sustainable goods and services, as well as the challenges of balancing sustainability with economic interests.
